Build Your Dance Crew
A dance crew is a group of people that share a passion for dance and agree to have one another’s back. A crew moves together as a team in unity but they also celebrate every member’s individual superpowers.
A CREW IS LIKE ANOTHER FAMILY.
How to Set Up a Dance Crew
RESPECT
The foundation for every crew is RESPECT. You need to make sure every member of your crew feels welcomed, included and valued. Come up with two things you can do to make sure you respect one another. Psst...hint: listen to each other. Psst...another hint: ahem, work as a team.
VALUE
Dance is the main thing that brings your crew together. But every crew stands for something. What does your crew value?
Psst...some ideas: community, friendship, fun, support, belonging..
NAME
Choose an epic name like The Fuzzy Pear Peach Tik Tok Crew! No? Ok, here are few examples of well-known and well-respected crews: The Rock Steady Crew,
The Jabbawockeez Crew, Zulu Nation Crew. Pick a name that represents what your crew is all about. It can be funny, serious, positive, or it can make a statement.
DESIGN
Now it is time to decide how to define your crew visually. Think about the shapes, colours, and styles that represent your crew. How do you want people to be able to recognize your crew? You could choose to all wear the same coloured t-shirt, or a similar styled hat, or to create a logo to print onto a hoodie.
LEAD
Every crew is a container for leadership. The way you express yourself as a group is unique, it can't be replicated, because there are no two crews that are the same. So what does your crew want to share with the community? A move, a style, or a vibe? Every member in your crew is a leader. Have a discussion about each member's strengths and decide how each of you is going to contribute to your crew. Make sure you aren't all trying to do the same thing. Every member has something unique to offer. Your job is to figure this out together and to work as a team to make sure every voice is heard and every idea is respected.
MOVE
Create a move for your crew. Think "The Dab" or "The Nay Nay." Make sure it's easy so that anyone can do it when they hear your crew name.
Share
Find your groove and then share your moves, together.
